What is toastmasters?

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organisation that helps its memebers improve skills in Communication, Public Speaking and Leadership. Meetings are held every 2 weeks and last 1,5 - 2 hours. At the meeting, members take up roles according to the program be it leadership or public speaking. There are 2 manuals which are available to registered members: Competent Leadership and Competent Communication. Either one of these paths lead to the highest accolade Distinguished Toastmaster

Competent Leadership

Competent Leadership program is the core of the Leadership track. The Competent Leadership manual features 10 projects that you complete while serving in various club meeting roles. An evaluator will give you feedback on each project, helping you to improve. When you complete the manual, you are eligible for the Competent Leader award.


Advanced Leader Program

After earning the Competent Leadership award, you can further refine and develop more complex leadership skills by completing projects in manuals that are part of the Advanced Leader Program.

Competent Communication

The 10 speech projects in the Competent Communication manual help you develop your speaking skills one step at a time. When you finish all of the projects, you are eligible for the Competent Communicator award.


Advanced Communication Program

After receiving the Competent Communicator award, you can begin to develop more advanced speaking and communication skills through the Advanced Communication Series manuals. There are 15 total, each containing five speech projects. Many of the manuals are career-oriented. You choose the manuals you want to complete and the skills you want to learn..

1.What is Toastmasters International? What is St Petersburg Speechmakers?

Toastmasters International is a non-commercial organization founded in the USA more than 90 years ago to help people develop their public speaking and leadership skills in a friendly environment. Toastmasters today is a network of self-governed clubs around the world. St Petersburg Speechmakers is the first public Toastmasters club in St Petersburg. The second club JTI Best Speakers is corporate-based, it’s open only for JTI employees. The meetings in both clubs are held in English.


2.Why become a member of Toastmasters?

If you want to develop as a speaker, gain confidence and master your communication and leadership skills, Toastmasters has a lot to offer. Following its proven learn-by-doing program, you will prepare projects aimed at developing a certain skill. A regular practice together with feedback from the club members ensures your progress.


3.What are the requirements to join the Club?

You have to be 18 years old or more and be able to express yourself in English quite fluently. The language skills are hard to evaluate, so please feel free to visit one of the meetings to understand if you feel comfortable enough.


4.Does the Club provide opportunity to learn/improve English language skills?

Toastmasters Program is not an English language course. You should already have quite a high level of language skills to join the Club. However, as the meetings are held in English, it's a good opportunity to improve your speaking skills.


5.Do I need to pay to visit the Club?

It's free to join the meeting as a guest. Members pay membership fees of $33.75 once in 6 months and small payments to cover the Club's costs (appr. 2000 rubles per 6 months). Also, there is a registration fee of $20 for new members.

6.How often do the Club meetings happen and where?

The meetings take place bi-weekly, usually on Saturdays 7 pm, at Sberbank Next venue on Naberezhnaya Kanala Griboyedova 18. However, please check the details of the next meeting with the Club Office spbspeechmakers@gmail.com as the time and venue for the meeting may vary.


7.How should I prepare for my first Toastmasters meeting?

No specific preparation is required to join the meeting as a guest, just bring a pen, you will need it at some point of the meeting.


8.What will be expected from me once I become a member?

Once you become a member, you will be expected to attend the meetings regularly, treat your fellow members and guests with respect, and support the friendly and encouraging environment in the Club. Also, please take a look at the Club’s Code of Conduct.


9.How can I join the Club?

The first step is to visit the meeting as a guest. Please email vp-m@speechmakers.ru to confirm the time and place of the next meeting. Once you make a decision to join the club, please speak to one of the Club’s Officers or email vp-m@speechmakers.ru, and we will provide you with the application form. Once your application is processed, you will be sent the manual set and will be able to make your first project!
